My 10th grade Social Studies teacher wore his hair grey and long, like George Carlin. He lectured to us from his yellow legal pads and tested us in the blue books we would later see in college. He covered Australopithecus, Samurai warriors, Ghandi & Thoreau, and world religions, all the while regaling us with tales of his time serving in the Vietnam War (tales which years later were discovered to be fiction). This man made me want to not only be a teacher, but to be a charismatic one who can teach through stories and bring children's studies to life.
I went to the University of Washington in Seattle and earned a BA in Comparative History of Ideas studying the question of human nature and how that question is evident in History, Literature, Philosophy, Religion, and Anthropology. I received my MA in Education in 2004 and began teaching high school Social Studies in northern New Jersey. For seven years I taught basic, CP, and Honors US History, as well as World History, Ethnic Studies and a very popular Contemporary Social Issues course. I spent my spare time as advisor to the Senior Class, REBEL, and Spring Musical, as well as collaborating with my peers in various groups, including the Professional Development Committee for three years. In 2009, I took classes at Centenary College and earned my Supervisor's licensure.
My family moved to southern New Jersey in the summer of 2011. I currently teach Literacy and Media Technology to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in a large, demographically-diverse school with amazing students, teachers, and administrators, all from whom I learn something new each day. Having already earned certifications in SS, Language Arts Literacy, Elementary Ed, Special Education, and Supervisor, I thought it was time to further my education and earn my certification as a principal, which I recently finished.
If I were not in Education, I would spend my days reading, cooking healthy and interesting dishes for my family (even though they would prefer chicken nuggets), and traveling to far-off lands. But alas, I cannot imagine not working with students and teachers, so these endeavors will have to wait.
